Utah includes a sizable community of immigrants with nearly 9% of the state's residents born in a foreign country. The state has historically welcomed immigrants, but not without ongoing debates and challenges related to immigration policies, public safety, and economic impacts. Utah has taken certain steps to address immigration issues, including the enactment of regulatory legislation, and the adoption of a state compact on immigration policy developed by a cohort of business and community leaders. Immigration is a topic whose complexity results from its deeply personal nature, its affects on families and communities, and the way it touches each of us emotionally.
Team Democracy has engaged award-winning filmmaker,
Kristi Kendall, to produce a video from the event that will be shared widely across the community, and across social and traditional media outlets.
